Anime Beginners Guide


What is anime? Put simply anime is Japanese animation. In Japan, the term anime refers to all animation, while in English it is generally used to refer to a style of animation developed in Japan.

The visual styles used are an important aspect of anime. Although these vary by artist and by studio, many of the the stylistic elements are very common and thus considered to be a determining factor when classifying animated features/shows as anime.

Traditionally, animation has been considered as a medium designed for children. In recent years, thanks in part to such television shows as 'The Simpsons' and 'South Park' the target audience for various animation has changed, and it is no longer dismissed as just for children.

Despite this, the genres covered in Anime are still greater than those covered by mainsteam western animation. Anime movies / TV shows can and do cover all the genres that are found in live action.
